As a student leader in elementary school, Avaanya came up with the idea of starting a Pink Shirt Day initiative to promote anti-bullying and kindness. The idea was simple but meaningful, pink sticky notes were handed out across the school, and every student wrote words of encouragement and affirmation on them. Messages included things like “You’ve got this,” “I believe in you,” and “I know some days are tough, but you can do this.”
After collecting the notes, they were placed on students’ lockers after school so that the next morning, everyone arrived to a positive message waiting for them. The initiative had a huge impact, with many students keeping the notes on their lockers long after Pink Shirt Day had passed.
Seeing how meaningful it was, Avaanya decided to bring the initiative to her high school as well. Over the past two years, it has become a well-loved tradition, with hallways filled with pink sticky notes and messages of support. Even weeks later, many lockers still remain covered in the notes, showing the lasting impact the initiative has had on the school community.
What started as leaving encouraging notes on park benches transformed into a city-wide movement. Maria began placing handwritten messages of hope and encouragement in public spaces across Barcelona. Within months, strangers started contributing their own notes, creating a web of positivity that now spans the entire metropolitan area.
Maria noticed that people in her neighborhood seemed disconnected, always rushing past each other. She started leaving small notes with messages like 'You are enough' and 'Today is your day' on park benches during her morning walks. People began photographing them and sharing on social media. Now, there's a community of over 200 'Note Writers' who meet monthly to craft messages together.
